How Your Brain Talks You Out of What You Want

March 8, 2023

Sometimes you want something but your brain gives you a shutting down thought. It’s a thought that stops you from wanting.

Common ones include:
I don’t have time.
I never implement things.
Nothing is going to help me.
I don’t have the money.
It’s probably not Catholic enough.

I break down how to think about each of those thoughts to figure out what you really want.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE SHOW

Hello Mamas. Today we’re gonna talk about why we don’t do things that we know we should do. And I was first thinking about this when I was teaching a class in masters. We’re talking about creating a sacred self-identity this quarter, and we talked about our identities as women in creating beautiful spaces in our homes. And a lot of us have a very negative view of our ability to create a beautiful space. And we think we don’t have the skills or the time or the money, and we have all these thoughts and I called them shutting down thoughts where we have a thought and it just shuts us down so much that we don’t really move beyond it. We don’t problem solve it, and we don’t think about it again. And then, you know, weeks and months pass by and for a lot of us years and we’re like, wow, why haven’t I painted this room?

Hosts

Lorissa Horn & Sterling Jaquith

Sterling and Lorissa are very different moms. Lorissa lives in town, her family loves playing baseball, and she’s proud to send them to Catholic school. Sterling lives in the country, her family loves camping, and she unschools the kids.

The thing these women have in common, an unyielding devotion to Christ. Seriously, if you hang out with either of them, they’re gonna talk about Jesus, a lot. He’s the center of their life.
